About Founder

Sajeev N K (born 1973) is an Indian Theatre Actor, Director and Acting Coach, who is the founder of ‘ActLab’- Actors Training Laboratory, based in Cochin, Kerala. He is a renowned acting trainer, director of many famous plays and a guest faculty at Pune Film and Television Institute of India.

As renowned acting coach/ tutor Sajeev has trained over thousands of aspiring actors in India. He has been associated with Indian Film and television industry since 2000. The actors training for 10 years with various Theatre Groups and Acting Schools gave him the exposure to be an expert in body movements, voice training, direction of plays and method acting.  Sajeev started conducting Acting Workshops by being associated with Hartman de Souza for Rafeequi Theatre at Bangalore. He independently started training and coaching actors in 2005 by being a Guest Faculty at Pune.  He started ActLab – Actors Training Laboratory in 2009 and since then had been offering training programs through workshops across India and abroad. He has established his own Acting School at Cochin 2013.

He initially focused on workshops that relates to Voice, Movement and Acting’ in association with Sanskriti, a cultural promotion organisation at Delhi in a series from 2006. Later on he delivered a series of actors training workshop for Nadakam.com in Riyadh, JanaSamskrithi and Kalabhavan Chapter at Qatar establishing himself as a talented and sorted acting tutor. Sajeev also delivered a series of Actors Grooming program for Surya TV, in the program titled ‘Sensations’ from 2007 -2010. To summarise his credentials as an acting coach he has served as Guest Faculty for ‘Acting – Movement Arts’, ‘Role of Kalari in Actor’s Training, ‘Art of Body Flexibility and Mindfulness’ (2005 – 2014) at the following institutions:

At ActLab, Sajeev conducts 3 days workshop for acting aspirants burning the bridge between their past notions and future aspiration, facilitating the unlearning and relearning process through various activities and challenges. Two months long residential Actors Training Program and Sunday Acting Classes are led by Sajeev at Cochin ActLab Campus since 2013.

S0A0036At the age of 17, Sajeev as a youngster passionate for acting, theatre and full of creative energy, started ‘Campus Theatre’ at Nattika Sree Narayana College, Thrissur (1989) with the confidence in being associated for founding the Drama Enquiry and Learning Theatre (DELT) at Thrissur under directions and guidance of T.V. Balakrishnan.

Sajeev got trained as an Actor under the tutelage of dramatist K C Manavendranath at one of the most famous Theatre groups in Kerala, Anganam in 1992. The three months intensive actors training class with Hartman deSouza in 1993 changed his perceptions and notions regarding acting as a career. To sharpen the skills in acting, he mastered Kalarippayattu, unique martial art of Kerala, from Vallabhatta Kalari Sangam, Chavakkad (1992- 98), Veda Kalari Sangam, Mullasseri, Thrissur (2005- 09) and basic training in traditional classical art forms like Kadhakali and Koodiyattom, alongside Hindustani, Carnatic music which helped him on a later date to develop his own ways of training acting aspirants who joins the residential regular batch Actors Training Program at ActLab.

Sajeev got selected by Human Resource Department, Govt. Of India for Talent Scholarship to undergo an indepth study in Movement and Voice skills required for Acting in 1996. And out of the selected scholarship awardees, through selective screening he was chosen to attend an HRD one month intensive workshop for Acting in Allahabad and was given opportunity to perform at Patna Gandhi Maidan, the play “Virus” for delegates from across India.

The most significant training that Sajeev attained was after being selected to be part of Ford Foundation Project through Anganam Theatre. It gave him the opportunity to get trained by Masters of Indian Renaissance Theatre like Bensy Kaul, Rudhra Prasad Sen Gupta, Probeer Guha, Lokendra Aambam, MuthySwamy Anmol Vellani, Neelam Mansingh Chowdary and other eminent personalities during the program. He has also worked with distinguished film and theatre personalities like Mr. K. Paintal, Ms. Veena Pani Chawla, Mr.Tim Supple and others. He was also the associate director of National Award winning movie ‘Neythukaaran’.

S0A0004-768x512Sajeev took the lead role in the play “A Thousand Rivers” directed by Hartman de Souza in association with Khel Goa Theatre (1993) and had presented it in different stages across country, which was in fact the landmark start of his Theatre acting in India. His lead role in “Padavukal – The Steps”, directed by Priya Nandanan, based on Sophocles Oedipus and that of G Shankarapillai’s Bharathavakyam had made a ride across Kerala during 1996-97. He immortalized the lead role in the play “Koodaaram – The Tower” in association with “Koothu-p-Pattarai” and Alliance Française.

Sajeev made an outstanding ‘Solo Performance’ in the play “Paaduka Paattukara”- based on life story of renowned Music Director M. S Baburaj, which was directed by Sasidharan Naduvil, and had later staged the play on demand in over 100 venues in India and abroad.  He got associated with leading art and cultural organisations in India like Promtima Bedi’s Nritya Gram, Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Academy, etc. He also performed a lead role in “Agni’ by Vayala Vasudevan Pillai and that play was directed by Samkutty Pattomkari. It was a major attraction at the National School of Drama Theatre Fest ‘Bharangam’ (Bharat Rang Mahotsavam) in 2005. Later the same play was performed in Soorya Theatre Fest at Thriruvanathapuram. He has collaborated as an actor with Latin American Director Elias Cohen for the stage play in the culmination ceremony of International Theatre Festival of Kerala in 2010.
